Gerry Sheridan tells the story of the young Irish boy with big ears using clear vivid images, supported by dream like mandoline melodies.
The premier of the children’s play „Keep your ears cocked“ directed by Bart Hogenboom is a touching story that the actor Gerry Sheridan portrays with humour and pathos.
With lots of fantasy and minimal changes in the few requisites he has, Sheridan manages to conjure up unbelievable stage images. All he needs for this fits in his backpack. His young audience is drawn into the story through his mimic, gestures and his special talent for understanding the world of the child.
One day the young Irish boy Tom, who’s always being laughed at because of his big ears, has the idea that the others would like him if he was rich. So he decides to go searching for the end of the rainbow. Then - according to the saying – gold is hidden there and protected by the Leprechaun. Touchingly Tom tells of his journey on the ship over the stormy see: With colored lighting, the underside of a tent and a little paper ship he manages in the „turning of a tent“ to create an impressive stage image.
Tom experiences many adventures but he doesn’t find the gold. Rather he finds silver cutlery stolen from a village and brings it back to the owners. The villagers receive him as a hero. So finally he hasn’t got any treasures but many friends.
In the last scene he sings „You’re my greatest treasure, making new friends is my greatest pleasure“. The rich content of the plot and the lovingly chosen situations and images drew the children like a magnet into the drama.
These funny, dreamlike and magical scenes of head over heels tent, nit picking cutlery or Leprechaun shadow play should not be missed.
„Keep your ears cocked“ is worth seeing and the premier was entertaining for children and adults.
